TO MY YOUNG FRIENDS
Do you have any idea how much tenderness you evoke? As you grapple with loneliness, friendships, and the conflict between permanence and transience, the fresh glow of childhood trust still peers through your eyes, even as maturity’s firmness is settling into your face. And we, your forerunners applauding on the sidelines, jealously guard the treasure of your confidence and press infor Heaven’s wisdom on your behalf. Most of us didn’t possess half your character at that age. Did you know that?
Even so, life taught us a thing or two along the way, and oh, if we could impart to your core the peace that brought us. Glancing back at almost five decades of life, the first half lived in aimless pursuit of what the second half has tasted, and Paradise will satisfy, the tears in my throat spring from astonished gratefulness.
None of the pain was wasted. In retrospect, God was at work before I ever knew Him. How much more for you who already know and seek Him! Please believe that He is greater than the mistakes you fear, more invested in you than the people you miss or hope for, and more passionately envisioning what you are becoming than anyone else.
He, who planted this personal garden of imaginations, aspirations, and ambition in your soul, knows how to tend it just right. You cannot yet know how effective a tool time is in His hand…
People I loved and lost decades ago, He brought back.
Broken, crooked emotions He healed and straightened.
Deserts I dried up became a lush oasis.
Dear ones, He promises you:
“I will go before you
And make the crooked places straight;
I will break in pieces the gates of bronze
And cut the bars of iron.
I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden riches of secret places,
That you may know that I, the Lord,
Who call you by your name,
Am the God of Israel.
~ Isaiah 45:2-3
“You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us”
